About Our Lab
The communication and professionalism lab is located in the Department of Medical Education, Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University. The goals of the lab are to enhance medical students' and health professionals' development and identify formation as attentive, sensitive, caring practitioners.
To achieve this, the lab team, headed by Prof. Orit Karnieli-Miller, focuses on teaching and studying medical students' and physicians' values, knowledge, and competencies. The lab focuses on studying and teaching interpersonal skills and communication skills in medicine, concentrating on breaking bad news and shared decision-making, professionalism in medicine, and the development of physicians' reflective ability.
The research is oriented toward developing the teaching of communication in healthcare, understanding the needs of the different populations involved (physicians, medical students, patients, family members), and building a theoretical understanding of the dynamics present in physician–patient and physician–patient–family member interactions, as well as students' learning processes while coping with this material.
The lab members include experts and students from diverse backgrounds (social science, medicine, health professions) applying qualitative and quantitative studies.

She received her PhD in Social Work with a specialty in communication in healthcare. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Regenstrief Institute at Indiana University School of Medicine, focusing on professionalism and humanism in healthcare.
Throughout her academic career, Prof. Karnieli-Miller focused on enhancing patient-centered care with expertise in the field of:

Prof. Karnieli-Miller is the director of communication skills training in the faculty of medicine in Tel Aviv University.
She recently received the honor of the Academy of Communication in Healthcare Payer Award for “outstanding contributions to the literature on the theory, practice and teaching of effective healthcare communication and related skills.”
Prof. Karnieli-Miller has been awarded numerous significant research grants and has published widely in leading peer-reviewed journals within the field of medical education and communication in healthcare.
